BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Learning has been revealed to be a highly difficult topic in the fields of education and psychology all across the world. Several researchers have attempted to describe it in various ways, and each description is somewhat correct. Over the years, studies on the elements that impact kids' academic performance have piqued the interest of not just scholars, but also teachers, counselors, psychologists, and school administrators. Students' understanding and implementation of successful study skills or approaches is referred to as their study strategy. The phrase study habit relates to how students study, whether it is methodically, effectively, or inefficiently. In accordance with what has been said above, we may conclude that a good study habit will undoubtedly result in excellent academic results and accomplishment, whereas an inefficient or bad study habit will result in academic failure. Students' attitudes and study habits toward any topic have been defined as a consequence of enthusiasm combined with their conviction in that subject, which has a long way to go on their academic accomplishments.

Many elements have been identified in Nigeria that impact students' capacity to build effective and efficient study habits. These aspects include health, motivation, anxiety, and mental condition, a favorable and adequate atmosphere for learning, the availability of textbooks, and well-equipped libraries. The factors of poor academic performance among Nigerian students were carefully investigated in a study conducted by (Nuthana & Yenagi, 2009). Some of the reasons found include: low student intellectual capacity, accomplishment motivation, a lack of objectives, low self-esteem, a low socioeconomic level of the family, poverty, and a bad study habit.

A study was conducted at a few chosen Nigerian schools to determine some of the key factors of pupils' poor academic performance. Some of the issues cited include insufficient instructors, insufficient school facilities, problems created by poor family background, negative government policies, and insufficient educational sector funding (Ajila and Olutola 2007). Similarly, Ichado (1998) contends that the student's surroundings has a significant influence in determining study habits, which in turn affect academic achievement. The idea of study habit is vast since it encompasses practically all of its subtopics, including study attitude, study technique, and study competence. In a study done by Allport (1960), it was stated that developing a good study routine can significantly improve students' academic performance. Successful students throughout the world are supposed to have a good attitude toward their studies and to be time careful about what they have to complete.

According to Hussain (2000), study habits are predispositions that students have established through time toward private readings. According to him, a good study habit is the key to academic success.

Morahan (1999) conducted research and discovered that male and female students study in different ways (study habit). In this study, he observed that male students were drawn to courses with more logic and sciences, whilst female students were drawn to simpler courses. This is in accordance with their enthusiasm, which necessitates a different study habit and may have a good influence on students' academic performance. Positive academic performance and accomplishment are dependent on the student's capacity to manage his time, plan his studies, develop the habit of attention, note-taking, mental review, overlearning, and the prudent use of whole and part method massed and scattered learning, among other things. In other words, good academic achievement is a result of good study habits and skills. Because study habits are such a crucial aspect of learning, it is necessary to analyze their nature.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Problems with study habits may have a significant impact on a student's academic performance; it is considered that everyone has a distinct study habit, and it is critical to choose the best personal manner to study. Studying with friends has a long way to go in students' study habits; it has a beneficial influence in that they discuss what they have read together, but it also has a negative influence in that they may not read but chat throughout the time allotted for reading, resulting in time waste.

A very excellent and conducive atmosphere supports students' study habits, which may have a beneficial influence on their academic results; nevertheless, students reading in an unattractive environment may find it difficult to study, which may have an impact on their academic achievements. Students with little financial resources may also find it challenging to achieve academically.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The following are the objectives of this study:

  1. To examine the correlation between study habit and academic performance
  2. To examine the effect of study environment on study habit
  3. To determine factors affecting students’ study habit and academic performance

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. What is the correlation between study habit and academic performance?
  2. What is the effect of study environment on study habit?
  3. What are the factors affecting students’ study habit and academic performance?

1.5 RESEARCH  HYPOTHESIS

Hypothesis 1

HO: There is no significant relationship between study habit and academic performance

HA: There is significant relationship between study habits and academic performance.

Hypothesis 2

HO: There is no significant relationship between study environment and students’ academic performance.

HA: There is significant relationship between study environment and students’ academic performance.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The following are the significance of this study:

The outcome of this study will help students in understanding the effect on study habit and study environment on their academic performance and helps in serving as a guide for a positive result.

This research will also serve as a resource base to other scholars and researchers interested in carrying out further research in this field subsequently, if applied will go to an extent to provide new explanation to the topic.

1.7 SCOPE/LIMITATIONS OF STUDY

This study on the impact of study habit on academic performance of students will cover various approaches to study and its effect on the academic performance of students.

Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Study: application of the mind to the acquisition of knowledge, as by reading, investigation or reflection

Habit: an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary.

Performance: the accomplishment of a given task measured against preset known standards of accuracy, completeness, cost and speed. Reading Interest

Students: a person formally engaged in learning, especially one enrolled in a school or college. Reading Interest.
